Our blog was founded by Lauren Daniels, on her quest to create a definition of beautiful that does not have one strict set of requirements. The name 'Kinky Skylaur' refers to the kink in natural hair along with a combination of Lauren and her daughter Skye's name.

"Kinky Skylaur started as a thought almost 4 years ago. Shortly after the birth of my almost 4 year old daughter, I started seeing some curls coming through on her crown. Though much about motherhood and parenting was new to me at the time, i knew for sure that I wanted to teach her to love her natural self before anything else.

Now, I come from a time where straight hair defined beauty; neatness, cleanliness and professionalism. As an adult I have no memory of my hair ever curling. After looking through some old pictures I believe I had my first relaxer done between the ages of 4 and 6 years old. Apart from not having any memory of my hair curling, I had no idea how to care for curly hair. So it's been almost 4 years of research and trying different methods and techniques until finally, we found what works for Skye.

Shortly after my daughters 3rd birthday she mentioned that she wishes she had straight hair like mine. I burst out laughing at the innocence and mentioned I actually have curly hair. But this little girl wasn't having it, she looked at me angrily and said "how can you say that when I can see you hair is straight mommy?". This heart of mine sunk so deep within me. With all that i have been through to manage her hair, i had only just realized that I was the wrong teacher, simply because I didn't even accept myself naturally.

So there I was, February 2020 deciding that I too will now be going natural - this, after trying to transition in 2017 and 2018 and failing both times. After a month of transitioning I did the big chop, I couldn't handle the different textures and I needed my daughter to see results quickly to get her out of the straight hair fantasy she had going for herself.

Now when looking at the first part of this post, many will ask what does hair have to do with the significance of beauty and self acceptance. My answer? Literally everything. Hair is a women's pride. It's what people notice first when a women walks into a room. A bad hair day will almost always affect a women's mood and the way she carries herself. By creating a norm of straight hair being beautiful, our beautiful curly crowned women fade into the shadows, manipulate to fit the norm and almost always regret it later on in life.

My blog will not be about forcing women to return to or remain in their natural state. But rather, an informative piece in accepting, growing in and caring for your natural state so an informed decision can be made on whether or not this is something an individual would want to commit to forever. "
