7 Natural hair myths we have all heard at some point
Updated: Aug 5, 2020

In general, there is a huge misconception about natural hair and the journey that goes with it. Though we hear believable information about hair and how it operates, are they really true? Below are some of the most common things we come across in the natural hair community:
We woke up like this - We absolutely did not. And if we did, it is only because of a carefully sought out and followed night time routine and even so, it takes a good amount of fluffing, shaking and hoping for the best before we leave the house. There are so many steps that go into washing and preparing your hair for a particular style. Though natural hair is thought to be easier to maintain, I guarantee you it is not. We spend more hours on our natural hair than we did on damaging our hair.
Styling products make our hair curl – There is literally no product in the world that will make your hair curl if your hair cannot curl on its own. This is especially relevant to people joining the natural community expecting immediate results. The purpose of these styling products is to enhance the curl your hair naturally has. If your hair is damaged or type 1, you can apply the product before your favourite curl training technique to help form and hold the manipulated curl pattern.
Trimming your ends makes your hair grow faster – Your hair grows from the root. Therefore, trimming does not affect how fast your hair grows but does have an overall impact on the health of your hair. In fact, trimming too much or too often can result in you not seeing growth progress in your hair. For example, if your hair grows 1cm over a 4 week period and you trim your hair by 1cm every 4 weeks, can you see how your hair length would remain the same? It is therefore important to keep track of how much your hair grows over a certain period of time to be able to schedule your trims and how much you will trim effectively.
High porosity hair is damaged hair – Though this is partially true, it is not always true. Yes, when hair becomes damaged over time it does widen the gaps in the cuticle resulting in high porosity hair. However, it is also completely normal for healthy hair to be very porous.
Sleeker textured hair transitions easier – completely wrong, the tighter the curl pattern along with how damaged your hair is, the harder it will be to transition.
Curl type is a factor in choosing products - it really shouldn't factor. Things like porosity, density and hair width are more important when choosing products. You should however consider your curl type in your application process. Looser curl patterns should get less product.
Leaving your hair alone makes it grow faster - hair is always growing so it will grow even when left alone. It wouldn't grow faster though. The correct vitamin and mineral intake, caring for the scalp and routine is what will encourage faster growth.
